Digital onboarding

Designing a clear digital onboarding verification flow

Digital onboarding works best when identity checks appear at a purposeful moment, request only the evidence needed, and provide a clear recovery path when the standard journey cannot continue.

Start with the business decision

Define the account, service, or risk decision before choosing a verification level. This keeps the integration proportional and makes acceptance rules easier to review.

Make the journey understandable

Tell users what they need, why it is requested, and what happens next. Preserve entered data where appropriate so a recoverable camera or network issue does not restart the entire journey.

  • Set expectations before identity entry or selfie capture.
  • Use specific, accessible error guidance.
  • Offer a controlled escalation route.

Measure operational quality

Track completion, technical errors, retries, review volume, and time to a final business decision. Test non-production analytics with local fixtures rather than sending staging events to production analytics services.

Define the recovery sequence

Keep completed low-risk steps when a later camera or network step fails, where policy permits. Tell the user whether to retry, change device conditions, contact support, or enter a controlled manual-review path.
